Barbados

So.. the fact that the people I travelled around Barbados with are likely going to read this is giving me serious writers block.  Hence the ridiculous procrastination.  However, Barbados is awesome, so I'm going to write about it anyway and hopefully I'll still be invited back!

I spent the first two weeks of December in Barbados.. and I already want to go back.  It was a very unplanned trip.. I booked the flight about a week before I left, stayed with a friend, and made the rest up as I went along.  Because it was so unplanned, I'll just give you my highlights..

East Point, Barbados

{East Point}
This one is pretty high up there on my favourite spots in Barbados.  The rugged coastline paired with the sound of crashing waves is nothing short of perfection.  It also happens to include a picture-perfect rustic lighthouse, and what I am convinced to be the best place to watch the sunrise.. which you have to do at least once.  Pack a picnic or a good book and break away from the bustle of city life.

{Sunsets}
Those Bajan sunsets tho..  don't miss them.  Enough said.

{Crane Beach & Hotel}
If you're looking for some fun waves and body-boarding, the beach at the Crane is the place to go.  The beach is gorgeous, the resort grounds are immaculate, and the water will keep you entertained for hours.  Don't even try keeping your hair dry.. you will fail.

Atlantis Submarines

{Atlantis Submarines}
Basically, you go into a submarine, dive down about 140ft., and meander along the coral reef seeing massive schools of fishes and such while you do so.  If that doesn't excite you.. well.. I can't help you out.  It's very cool.  It's pricey enough, but it's worth doing once.

West Coast Beaches
{Beaches}
One thing I learned from the locals, is that they seem to find a single-digit degree seasonal temperature change 'drastic', and therefore resort to drastic measures such as pulling out duvets and refraining from the 'frigid' waters.  However, for those of us who are not accustomed to such high temperatures on a continual basis, the water is actually delightfully warm, so much so that one can swim all day long and not really ever get cold. Whatever it is that you are looking for in a beach, you'll be able to find it here.  East coast; surfing, body boarding, waves, etc.  West coast; snorkelling, calm seas, etc.

Earth Works Pottery & Bathsheba

{Earth Works Pottery Studio & Area}
I found that this pottery studio wasn't really my style, however the location is really neat and it's a great stop to make.  There's another artists studio right next door which features a variety of items (glasswork, pottery, artwork, etc).  There is also a Batik Studio on site, which offers classes to learn how to make Batik textiles.. this one is definitely on my list for the next time I go.

{East Coast Road}
This is a really spectacular road to drive.. it's extremely scenic and follows the coast for several miles.  It goes through Bathsheba, which features the unique rock formations and the soup bowl which is a popular surfing spot.

Bottom L: Boardwalk
Bottom R: Oistins Beach

{Oistins}
Ahh Oistins.. so much to offer in such a small town.  Friday nights, the Oistins Fish Market is the place to be.  The most delicious fresh, grilled fish you'll likely ever have, and music until the wee hours.  The Oistins beach is also a great "local" place for a swim.   At some point you should pick up some fresh fish cakes also.. they are a great treat, best when they are hot.

Art Splash Cafe; Photo Cred: K. Stork

{Hastings; Town & Boardwalk}
The town of Hastings has lots of small shops to browse around, and a few cafes to choose from.  The one pictured here, Art Splash, is right on the main road; they serve delicious smoothies and to-die-for lemon squares.  The boardwalk is really well done and follows the coast for about a mile.  It's a perfect spot to go for a walk when you get tired of the commotion that comes hand in hand with walking the streets, where there are sometimes sidewalks and rarely slow moving vehicles.

Lizard & Mango Tree

{Nature}
There are so many interesting things to see in Barbados, both in the sea and on land.  Get out of the resort and enjoy it!  Swim with a turtles.. Hike with the lizards.. Snorkel with the fishes.. Stop and smell the flowers..

Paddleboarding Tour

{Watersports}

Paddleboarding, kiteboarding, surfing, windsurfing, snorkelling, diving.. you name it, you can do it here!  And the best part is, you won't freeze doing it!  Bring a rashguard for the sun though.

I hope this inspires you to enjoy a trip to Barbados!
